Altus ready for Speed Cup

Free day in Barcelona, I have gone to the field early in the morning with my father, we had met with Dani to prepare Speed Cup, after some flights with some ballast I don't have any doubt about which plane I will fly in the contest: Altus. Is the best plane I've never flew (Today was my second day with him), very easy to trim and launch, now is time to fly, fly and fly again.... So cute that rarest bugs want to be with him. Lot of breaking lines because windy conditions :-( Some photos here.

Finally my Altus

Wow....!!!!! Finally I have flown my Altus. Very happy with his skills :-) More flights next Thursday in the morning, I don't think I will not have enough time to fly him in Speed Cup but I'm tempted to do... :-P Is a very easy plane to launch and very easy to fly in any conditions. Now is time to fly, fly and fly again to exploit his potential.

We have to be prepared for next generation of planes. No doubt a new Radical will be announced in few time, Crossfire 2 is coming, Jiri Baudis is offering his new plane with no official name.

How long is "The 2.000 € plane"? By the moment Altus is my bet :-P I should buy a piggy-bank.

Setting up Altus

Yesterday I was at my parent's house to set the CG and deflections of my Altus. I have to change the battery pack for a smaller one to make it lighter. I will keep you informed!!! Thank you very much for your help Mike.

Altus Premier

After a very exciting week following wc by webcam (10 Points for Organizers), now is time to think in Munich,next Season and next WC (China?) Dani and Alberto made their first f3b flights with Altus (In one or two weeks mine will be ready). First impressions: Altus is an easy plane to fly and loves ballast.

They were working with launch settings (highest altituded was 281 meters, very good "score" in Spain) and making some speed flights with some ballast. Now is time to fly, fly and fly to get 110% of this amazing and original plane.

La Seu 2009

Today we have gone to La Seu d'Urgell to enjoy 4th Serie of Catalonian F3F League. 6 Rounds made and 5 won by Gerardo Plaza. While I'm waiting Carles send me the results I've posted some photos. I have changed some settings in my V-Ultra and it seems work nice :-) I'm a pour f3f pilot improving...

Birthday Present

Hey!!!!! Yesterday I pick up my 30th Birthday Present...an Exclusive and Cute plane: Altus!!!!! Waiting for the instalation of the Radio I made my last flights with my "Dear" Caracho. Iñaki Elizondo visited us and made some flight with his Radical. Now is time to mount servos and radio an prepare my Altus to flight with him in Munich. :-)

No Training

After one month without flying, we met yesterday afternoon to enjoy some relaxings flights. We had enough stress in Kirchheim. Srong windy conditions make very tought the start and we started to break lines.

We made two Symposium: "Changing lines in F3B Contest" & "How to breake so many lines in so little time".

Next meeting will be on 21st and I hope to recive my Altus for my Birthday :-) 27th June (For your information)

League 1 at Upton upon Severn on the 5th April

"Fish Meadow, always a nice venue kindly lent to us for the day by The Malvern Club.
L1 was the first event to be held combining both A and B leagues into one league. This was due to the low numbers of B pilots entering during 2008.
It did work well, although the CD Clive confessed to not liking the one league system because of difficulties with administration and manning of the bases. It does need a lot of understanding and help from all of the pilots putting of the tinkering and gossiping to man the bases and help expedite the competition.
Only new face this year was Neil Harrison flying his now very dusty Instinct home brew machine.
Ken Woodhouse was the B league pilot promoted to the A league for 2009.

All pilots flew the same planes that appeared at the speed comp so no new toys to report. The weather was great sun almost all day. 14 pilots took part.

Round 1 Slot 1 Duration
Split into 3 groups.
Lift was marked by circling birds and all took advantage
Mark Passingham (Ceres) 9:58 +100 landing bonus took the first slot narrowly pipping Bill Haley 1st place on Ascot and Dave Worrall (Crossfire+). Both falling short with 95 landing bonuses.

Round 1 Slot 2 Duration.
Ken Woodhouse (Radical) took the second slot from Norman Quirk (Europhia) and Mike Challinor (Precious) with Steve Haley( Radical) in 4th, again scores were within a couple of seconds but only Ken managed 100 landing bonus.

Round 1 Slot 3 Duration.

Neil Harrison managed to out point this group with Clive Needham (Tragi) and Chris Jubb (Tragi) following 2.5 minutes adrift.

Round 1 Slot 1 Distance.

Steve Haley managed to pip Paul Carrington (Needle 124) by one leg 24 to 23 with some masterly flying from both pilots. Dave Worrall had a bad start to his Distance season with i think 3 refly attempts that allowed him only time for 9 legs.

Round 1 Slot 2 Distance.

Ken Woodhouse and Bill Haley fought tooth and nail to gain dominance in this slot but to no avail as they both ended with 17 legs against Norman Quirk, just 1 leg adrift.

Round 1 Slot 3 Distance.

Mark Passingham won this slot easily with 20l with Alan Jones 18l and Chris Jubb 15 following on.
Mark did suffer a bad de-lamination of one of his Ceres wings at mid span maybe after a heavy landing. It was thought that this would put an end to his R1 hopes. He was however able to effect a good repair that allowed him to continue in R1.

Round 1 Slot 4 Distance.

Round 1 Slot 5 Distance.

John Stewart (Estrella) managed 21 blistering legs against Mike Challinor after Mike had a troubled time with three attempts at launching.

R1 Speed.

Steve Haley (Who will challenge him) was a good 4 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Mark Passingham found the attraction of the safety flag to great and received a zero point.

R2 Speed.

Steve Haley again showed his skills to advantage bettering Paul Carrington and Mike Challinor by a good 2 seconds.

R2 Slot1 Duration.

Ken Woodhouse and Steve Haley both with a full house took this slot.

Round 1 Slot 2 Duration

Clive Needham and Alan Jones battled it out for this slot with Clive just edging in with the landing bonus.

Round 1 Slot 3 Duration

Dave Worrall 10:01/95 took the 2nd slot with Bill Haley 10:03/90closely following.

Round 2 Slot 1 Distance.

Pul Carrington took this slot with 20 l against Norman Quirk.

Round 2 Slot 2 Distance.

John Stewart won this slot with 11l. Chris Jubb retired with a broken flap servo.

Round 2 Slot 3 Distance.

A very closely fought slot with all pilots in much the same air. All flying some way out from the field boundaries. Dave Worrall 26l managed to gain 1 leg over Mike Challinor 25l.

Round 2 Slot 4 Distance.

Bill Haley comfortably managed to complete 5 legs over his nearest competitor Clive Needham to take this slot.

Round 2 Slot 5 Distance.

Steve Haley 17l just pipped Mark Passingham 16l by one leg to take this slot."

2009 New Zealand Soarchamps

Here you have a small report about F3B Contest in 2009 New Zealand Soarchamps made by David James (Thank you very much David):

"Yeah - great contest at a great venue. Great to have wind to launch into as most of our comps are not good like that. Two full rounds and finished with round 3 speed. The best speed times were all by Joe Wurts in the 15sec bracket. Joe did fly a very fast 13.1 sec unofficial run in round 2 - the fastest some of us have seen a F3B ship go. 13 sub 20sec runs in all. Joe first followed by Chris & Dave. Dave flew a 16.69 & Chris a 16.91. Best distance laps was 22 laps by Joe & Richard Thompson."

Altus

Some time ago, Dieter Perlick post an ad in rc-network.de to sell an Altus Kit of Moulds, immediately we contacted with him and made the best offer for them. We have allready made first model. It made first flights last Sunday and will be flown in Faudoas contest next one.

If you have an Altus in your hand you realize that model is a small Warp-T with short Caracho 3K wings. I was affraid with weight, there were no reasons, finall weight 2,021 Kg

I don't know when, but Altus will be my next Toy (I have the scheme colours now I just have to decide myself)

Feelings of people that have flown Warp are good, so needless to say that this machine will work good and better. Do you know some plane made by "DP" didn't work? ;-)

F3B In Cal Valley 09

Americans have made first contest of season past weekend, lot of photos and results in RCgroups.com. Personally I think the Winner was the Chef. Seriously, congratulations to Mike Smith for his victory and everybody who flew and helped in this event.

New Toys for 2009

In spite the weather forcast we have gone to the field... Today Dani and Carles had to make their first flights with winch of their Radicals and Freestylers. We didn't have best conditions but we have felt the potential of both planes. I foretell good results for them.

I have met with my pals this morning to try out their new "Toys". But it looks a rare intense wind don't want to allow. The wind is so strong...

First Contests of the year

It seems this year f3b guys are cheerful, in France has begun the registration for their contest, and there is a waiting list of 19 pilots for first contest of the year in Eurotour in Salzburg aside the 70 pilots already registered, this year in Spain seems we are not going to have more than one contest so this year we'll have to make lot of kilometers... :-)

First flights of 2009

Very bad start of Season :-( I hadlot of problems to make good launches with New Age and my Caracho is still death after a lost of control in its second launch, so now I just have one plane in good conditions for whole season, my dream of go to Kircheim and Munich this year is vanishing :-( Best of the day... see my friends and specially Walter Reist (I haven't met with him for a lot of months). I try to fly again in two weeks to improve the launch of my loyal Newie.

But not everything have been bad news, I have had in my hands a Radical... what an amazing fuse guys! I hope Dani, the owner, will have lot of successes with him.

Schizo

Daryl Perkins, Lord of the F3B's WC, was developing a F3B model called Schizo, some days ago I e-mailed him asking for it. He responded very soon and sent me some photos, here is the answer (very interesting opinion about the new trends in f3b planes):

"... did build and sell a few. It was a pretty amazing model, but fit and finish was a bit lacking compared to the models of today, and even though it was crazy fast, and stiffer than any model I've ever seen (I could sit on the center panel).... guys were not happy. I ended up selling the molds to a guy in the NorthEast.

Kyle Paulson flew it in all the local F3F events and went undefeated with it. He loved it. It's VERY fast. Fastest model I've ever seen. It had some launch and spiral stability issues, and Tony Johnson, the guy who bought it, is adding some dihedral to the center panel, and making a cross tail for it. That will really make it a great model.

I still don't agree with the direction the newer F3B models have taken with regards to size. They're giving up so much in launch. While they have done amazing things cleaning them up since I was successful (the sections, the smaller cleaner fuses, etc...), I think over the next few years, you'll see the models get larger again in an effort to get some of the launch back..."

Next year will be on production his last design, a f3j model, Stalker 3.9

No F3B Budget for 2009

I'm not going to buy new F3B toys for next season. It will be enough my Newie and my Caracho. 2009 budget it will just for travels (I hope) By the way I have bought a tool that will help me to update my blog in any place :-)

1st F3B Open Pla de Vent

Every year in Spain is more difficult to organize f3b contests :-( Merino Family use to organize the F3B Nats with great effort. All Spanish f3b-ers should be very grateful. This year my club after 25 years has decided to set a contest. We met 11 pilots (including Fabrice Estivals from France) and we made 4 rounds. You can see the results in Alberto Portella blog.

Merino Bros. and Fabrice Estivals made the podium. Local pilots didn't have oportunities to achieved the first positions by penalties, crashes, tactical errors,... Best speeds for Fabrice with two 16.XX and best distance for Sergi Subies (27 laps) The organization was perfect and the environment very warm.

Im sure will be 2nd Edition!!!

Task B Team Record

Hey!!! A new success for F3B at Home Team!!! Last weekend we achieved a new team record with 27 laps in a Distance Round of 1st Pla de Vent F3B Open. Sergi Subies flew his brand new Ceres helped by me. I think this mark is the same that national record. We are not used to have great joy in last contests so we have to shape with these small victories. We hope next season will be better for our team!!!

Last weekend was hold Swiss F3B Nats. Podium was formed by Bohlen Family. Andreas flew a new plane... This time a Precious... Are we going to see in WC two pair of brothers flying planes from same builder?. I think I'm going to see an amazing fight between Herrig and Bohlen brothers :-)

XXXIII Torneo Villa de Madrid

Lot of time with no updates, I have been a litlle bit bussy this week because my job. Last weekend I was in Madrid in XXXIII Torneo Villa de Madrid. My father and me travel on Friday to make some flights in the field, we made more changes of lines than flights because the strong wind, I was afraid the weekend would be a nightmare but finally wind wasn't a matter :-)

The contest was going to start at 3 o'clock so we went to the field in the morning to set the tent, boxes and winches. We were 32 pilots and we just made two rounds (one per day). Very strong wind all weekend long so you had to take care in launches. The key of this contest (every year) is to be very careful, we never made more than three rounds, so If you make a fail you lost all your oportunities to get a good classification. I had this idea in my mind and after a horrible result in f3b nats I wanted to make a good performance and... I got it!!!!

Yes, I made my best result in a national contest 4th classified, that would be third because a wrong decision of the organzization (not unique). More people was affected by this decision. In round 1 of duration two pilots of the same team had to fly in the same group, they made an unofficial claim and after the answer of the organization they refused to fly this task. Second sad event was that organization join two pilots with the same frecuency in a duration group, the pilots lost their planes, one of them was a Portuguese pilot. Portuguese pilots decided to retire from the contest because they were very upset with organization.

Personally and fortunately I didn't have any problem but I understand pilots. Is very dificult to organize a f3b contest in Spain, there's no aeromodelling clubs with enough infrastructure. Grupo Halcon Club made this year the 33th edition of this contest. Congratulations guys! But I think in this kind of event you have to controll 100% some things like radio frecuencies. We practice a very expensive hobby/sport (at least for me) and when I pay a inscription for a contest I think that I transfer control frecuencies and a lot of more things to an Organization. By the way I'm sure there will be a 34^th edition, taking care of what happened this year.

In positive side... Spanish pilots have improved very hard in speed task. Daniel Portella got a new Spanish Speed Record: 16,16 seconds. And a lot of pilots flew under 18 seconds (not me) I made two 19 seconds speed flights. In one year I have improved about 5 seconds, so I'm very happy with it. Next events in Kassel and Emmen. Two contests with an amazing high level. Then will be time to enjoy and learn as much as possible.

2nd BMFA F3B UK League. 29th April 2007

New report about F3B UK League by Chris Jubb:

"Another good turn out for the second league event. Only a couple of the regular B leaguers not flying due to lack of models.

It was good to see the new B league pilots here again. Mark Passingham and Ken Woodhouse taking advantage of Ken’s motor home to make a weekend out of it. By all accounts a little extra practice on Saturday and a lot of wine Saturday night .

Weather was quite kind to us, not quite as poor as the forecast predicted.

After the pilots briefing from Clive Needham the competion started at 10:00.

Our normal program was flown to this schedule. A then B Duration Round 1. A and B Distance Round 1 and 2

A and B Speed Round 1 and 2 . Ending with the A and B R2 duration.

This schedule allows Clive to populate all of the manning and timing requirements at Bases A and B with little shuffling of helpers.

Round 1 A league Duration.

Slot1. Steve Haley (Estrella) took top honours just out landing Jonathon Wells( PlusTask), in Round 2 a couple of crossed lines forced a re-fly for the group. Dave Worrall ( Crossfire x) took 1000 points from his attempt and elected not to re-fly. John Whittle took best advantage from the refly to score 1000.

Round 1 B league Duration.

John Stewart (Europhia) took best advantage and outflew the rest in slot 1 by 1min.10s.

Mark Southall battled against Clive Needham also flying a Tragi and Ken Woodhouse with his x tail Crossfire to emerge the victor for slot 2.

Rounds 1 & 2 A League Distance.

Round 1. Bill Haley took advantage of some great air to take top spot in S1 flying his new Furio.

Steve Haley and John Whittle tied with 24 laps in slot 2 with Dave Worrall taking the lead in S3 with 24 laps.

Round 2.

Slots 1,2&3 showed some excellent close flying in more consistent air. Simon Jackson, Dave Worall and Paul Carrington headed their slots to take top points. Paul was flying his modified Skorpion F3B with single strand wire turbulator just in front of the aileron surface.

Rounds 1 & 2 B League Distance.

Clive Needham flying his new Tragi and Mark Passingham won both round slots with newcomer Keith Whitton winning slot 3. Keith has come back to soaring after a long absence. He is currently flying a veteran Calypso Contest . Its great to see him doing well.

Round 1&2 A league Speed.

Steve Haley again recorded the fastest speed time of 16.63s with Paul Carrington pushing his Skorpion to record 16.76

Round 2 Speed. Again Steve reigned supreme with 15.56 with Simon Jackson the closest to him with 17.16.

Round 1&2 B league Speed.

Round 1 Mark Southall flew superbly to record 19.16 using his Tragi a clear 2 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Unfortunately Ken Woodhouse launched his Crossfire into the ground after a mix up resulting in his model not being switched on. He did however change to his backup model (Arris) for round 2. Mark Passingham won the second round with a great run of 19.91.

Round 2 A League Duration. Slot 1 saw poor conditions and Bill Haley managed to overcome the rest but only recording a 4min47s flight.

Slot 2 Simon Jackson managed take advantage of the better conditions to squeeze home with 10.01 and maximum landing bonus.

Round 2 B League Duration.

By the time the B league final duration was held the quality of the air had improved and Ken Woodhouse showed that his Arris could take advantage of the available good air to record a win in slot 1. Slot 2 was just taken by John Stewart with Mark Passingham only just 1 second away.

These two flyers have only 4.3 points separating them from 1^st and 2^nd in the league. It promises to be a closely fought season.

Next League event is:- League 3 on SATURDAY 19^th May. Venue Retford Wetlands. Start 10:00 prompt."

F3B World Champs Field

Now we have in f3b-wm.ch the site plan, I remembered some years ago there was a Eurotour Contest in Emmen Airfield. In modellfluggeil.ch there's a lot of photos so you can take an idea about how looks the field.

F3B Spanish Championship 2007

Last weekend I was in F3B Spanish Championship 2007. F3B at Home Team (Sergi Subias, Fernando Valls and Sergi Valls) had to defend his trophy of year 2006... Impossible Mission. Every year there's fewer pilots. Like last contest in Palencia I was very well in one task, speed, I improve my personal score two times. Now my best speed is 19,50 seconds. Last best speed was 20,90... No comments, I know what you think. I got 14th place from 17 pilots and 4th place from 6 teams. I'm a little upset with my results but I know my "restricitions”, now I'm faster than ever, I got the 4 best average speed. It's a pitty this contest was not a Speed Cup :-P

Amazing perfomance of Portella Team, they won the Team trophy. All of them flew Walter Reist's planes. New Age and also Warp worked very good. Dani got his third National Championship and he is going to win more, I'm sure... Javier and Alberto has improved a lot his flight features since they are flying with Warp. Sometimes the plane improves the pilot.

Jesus and Ruben Merinos (2^nd & 3^rd) stroke again with his brand new Crossfire . I think their performance have stood up because they have a very good third member in the team: Miguel Casares, one of the best pilots in the little history of spanish f3b, After a rest of some years he has came back

Nunca Mais Team had the absence of the youngest pilot in Spain, Adrian Rodriguez. Alvaro went on with Furio and Jose Manuel Quintas has new planes this season: Ceres and Trinity, most of contest was flying Ceres. I think one week ago Quintas had a little crash with his Crossfire and he take the adventage to test his new planes. I think Ceres is a very interesting option with a lighter version.

Iñaki Elizondo, one of the strongest pilots got the 8^th position, this time flew with the Aris that won La Muela F3F International Contest. He is waiting for Radical but it doesn't arrive. So this time had to fly in not optimum conditions.

This time we had a new pilot, Marcos Martinez. He was attended by Carles Aymat and Andoni Gorriñobeaskoa. Marcos made nice photo's that you can see in his site. Friday afternnon made his first launches with his Tempus and next day began his first f3b competition. Very good Marcos!

And what about the F3B at Home Team...? Well, Sergi Subias flew very good, we had two mistakes in his flights: we lost task time in one of the distances and we made a 0 in last speed (we wait too much for launching, we made three launches and we spend working time before finish the task). Anyway he was fourth, and probably he would be 3rd if he had made the last speed :-( Our surprise was when the organization published for first time the individual results where Sergi Subias was 1st classified and Daniel Portella 2nd. Finally the results were corrected and the winner was Dani. My father had a lot of problems all weekend long. Friday evening decided to fly with Nyx Furio. He had been long time without flying Furio and that was a big handicap. Persoanlly it has been a bad contest but at least I have improved a lot in speed task, Madrid will be a new chance. And also Kassel and Emmen!!!!! I will fly in world cup, so I have to work very hard!!!!!!

Second Eurotour contest of this season was in Kirchheim. A three days competition with a lot of pilots. Podium with tree of most famous pilots of f3b world: 1st Denis Duchesne with Caracho X, 2ndReinhard Liese with Estrella DP (what about Diavolo? Oh oh oh...) and 3rd Andreas Böhlen withSupersonic-R. F3B Danish Championship 2007

Danish ”international” championship 2007 F3B was held 14th and 15th of april. Pilots from Denmark, Norway, Germany and Estland attended this event. 4 rounds was flown in nice weather.

Salzburg is in another planet, isn't it?

After check speed times of 13 Salzburger Wanderpokalfliegen F3B 2007 I want to belive them... but I can't. F3B guys seems to be very strong. 13, 14 and 15 are numbers that looks bad distances in my country. Not speed times!!!!!! :-P Waiting for photos... :-(

Sunday before F3B Nats

Today was the last day we fly before f3b nats. Alberto brought hes brand new Warp. The others with our planes: Dani- Newie, Sergi Subias - Crossi V and X, my father - Crossi V, Javier - Warp and me - Newie. Because the rain we fly less than we want, but I think homework are made. Now the competition will say me which is my level :-P Some photos here. I hope everything will be ok next weekend.

Report from UK F3B League 1 Venue. Upton on Severn. 1st April 2007

My friend Chris Jubb Has sent us a report of the first contest of UK League 2007:

In a departure from the norm of the last couple of seasons, league 1 was held at Fish Meadow in Upton.
A few worries for Clive Needham (CD) during the week leading up to the competition due to the field being flooded but on arrival the field had drained and was in good condition. A great entry was recorded with five new B league pilots entering.
Mark Southall, Ken Woodhouse and Mark Passingham taking up F3B as well as F3F. John Stewart returning after a few years absence and Keith Whitton being encouraged by Bob Dickinson to take part.

The day turned out quite breezy but with a fair amount of sunshine.

Round one, A league duration started at 10:00.

Group one was topped by Norman Quirk with his Europhia with Paul Carrington (Skorpion) just inching out John Whittle (Samsara MkII O/D) in group two.

Round 1 B league duration followed

Ken Woodhouse demonstrating that he does not need a slope to keep aloft and just held of Mark Passingham who overflew by 11 seconds, both flying Crossfires. John Stewart (Europhia) took top points in group 2.

Round 1 A league distance

Group 1 was lead by Norman Quirk with 21 legs.
Group 2 was very closely fought with all pilots recording 18 legs.

Round 2

Norman again showed the way, to complete 19 legs.

Rounds 1 and 2 B league distance

Nigel Witchalls , Mark Southall, Ken Woodhouse and John Stewart took top points although Nigel damaged his Cobra on the final turn forcing him to retire.
Steve Hoppe managing to catch a wingtip in round 1 on his final turn, result broken fuz and wing.

A league speed.

Task C was started with quite blustery conditions.
Round 1. Paul Carrington completed the coarse in 17.74 with Steve Haley trailing with 18.85.
Round 2 saw Steve pull out the stops with a 15.02 with Paul trailing at 16.52.

B league speed

Round 1 saw John Stewart with the fastest time 26.78. Ken Woodhouse was awarded 0 for cutting the safety line. Chris Jubb lost control of his cobra prior to entering the course. B league speed was now getting low on competitors.
Round 2. With only 5 out of the 10 pilots now competing Ken Woodhouse flew a very smooth course to record 22.81 with Mark Southall close behind with 23.56.

Final A Duration

By this time the weather had deteriorated somewhat and time was getting on.
Paul Carrington retired after a very loud flutter during the launch de-laminating the flap surface. Paul was trying to wring the last bit of launch height from his prototype Skorpion.
Steve Haley and Johnathon Wells won their respective groups demonstrating some fine flying and landing skills considering the weather.
B league final duration followed with John Stewart taking top honours but only managing 2.55 Wind was by now quite strong.
